• What is Your ONE Thing?

    Day 19 of 30

I just wanted to ask. If there was ONE thing you could do for a living, what would it be? Assume nothing is impossible. Nothing is out of reach.

I’ve been asking myself this one question more than any other for the past three years. You’d think I’d have a darn good answer by now. Maybe it’s the pressure of having to come up with ONE thing that I’m going to commit the rest of my life to… not knowing whether a year from now I’ll look back on the idiot I am today and want to wring my own neck.

I’ve had a calling prophesied over me multiple times. I’ve started a bazillion blogs. I’ve had more jobs than anyone my age should. I’ve tried on many shoes.

Then I read this statement by Seth Godin:

Leaders don’t get a map or a set of rules. Living life without a map requires a different attitude. It requires you to be a linchpin.

    p. 19 of Linchpin

That hit me like a ton of bricks. You see, whether I’m currently leading anyone or not, questioning the system and desperately trying to find a unique niche is a leadership move. You follow or you lead. If you step outside the box, you are a leader.

The problem is, in order to lead, you can’t be following. And if you’re not following, there’s no map!

Holeee Crap. There’s no freaking map. I have no idea where I’m going.

There IS a Navigator, however, who at least gives me a partial framework within which to build. I’m feeling really grateful for Him right about now.
