• Potty Training Looms

We’ve waited several months longer than most before attempting the whole potty training thing. And Gigi has been getting a little concerned. Of course, she’s concerned about a LOT  of things we do, so that’s okay.

My heart’s been touched by how we’re all rallying around Katie in this special time. Three days in a row, she’s initiated the desire to use the big girl potty. We act mostly nonchalant, putting no pressure or expectation on her, waiting around to see if she does her thing. We have this awesome musical potty that plays a celebratory jingle each time the sensors encounter liquids or solids.

When that music goes off, we wait until she stands up to make sure it’s not a false alarm. When we see she’s been successful, we celebrate with lots of whooping and hollering. She claps with us, celebrating her own success. But it’s been 100% Katie initiated. Well, we took this as a sign that it’s time, so this coming week, Heather will be dedicating the first 72 hours of the work week to full-on potty training. She’ll be blogging each day about it here.

What touches my heart is how we’ve changed family history by celebrating the successes of our daughter without putting heavy guilt or pressure on her to perform. There’s something wonderful about knowing we are all committed to not make her feel like a failure because she doesn’t potty where or when she’s supposed to.

These are little things… moments in time where we teach our children about life. What it takes to be pleasing in our parents’ sight. What our true value is (when we do something other than what is expected). There is always discipline for rebellion, but not for mistakes. To fail is human. To get up and try again is divine.

May we all encounter the Father’s unconditional acceptance and pass this amazing love on to our kids.
