Love Twitter with every bone in your body? You can take that passion for tweets and turn it into cash.
Everyone loves to share a good quote. Now you can offer people the chance to turn their most viral quotes into tee shirts, mugs, and stickers. But the real value of this business idea lies with the tees.
First, a warning
You’ll need rules and guidelines in place to protect people from having their content used without permission. Technically, tweets are public domain, but you can burn a few bridges by monetizing people’s words without their permission.
Non-text images may also be an option to avoid. There’s no control over where your customer sourced the image, so it’s probably best to avoid screen printing photos, paintings, and graphics until you solve the problem of ownership.
How this business idea works
Anyone can screen print tee shirts with words. The goal here is to design a custom design that resembles an actual tweet without violating any of Twitter’s trademarks. Simply blurring or removing trademarked item from the screen grab should suffice.
7 Potential Applications
Most people pin either their most popular tweet or a tweet that is most meaningful to them. Automatically syncing a visual demo of the visitor’s pinned tweet into their account dashboard is a sales tool for demonstrating the possibilities of this product.
Special Event Tweet
Want to get the word out about an upcoming event? Companies and brand ambassadors will buy bulk orders of a tweet they want to go viral that announces an upcoming concert, fundraiser, conference, or summit. Offering these tee shirts for free is another method of advertising.
People are naturally curious. If you’ve already created a viral hashtag or want to increase the popularity of a new one, wearing and giving away printed tees of your hashtag screenshot will increase visibility and the likelihood people will search for it on Twitter.
Conference Promo Tweets
One way to increase social media coverage of a conference is to offer announce a contest or giveaway: The 5 best tweets about this conference on Day 1 (or days leading up to conference) including #yourhashtag will be screen printed and handed out as tee shirts to the entire conference on Day 3.
Whether the shirts are worn during the conference isn’t what matters. The idea that your tweet might get recognized and hundreds of people might wear your printed tweet at some point is motivation enough to share about the conference online.
Conference Self-Promotion Tweets
I actually had tee shirts screen printed before I attended SXSW one year. The front of my tee shirts had my Twitter profile logo (white “D” over black circle at the time) and the back of the shirts had my Twitter handle (@danielthepoet at the time – I’ve since changed it to @danieldessinger).
As an introvert, I wouldn’t have met more than 5 people at that conference of thousands. But because I wore my Twitter name on my shirt every day of the conference, dozens of people followed me and tweeted hello to me as I walked the hallways and sat in a marketing session with my back to the people sitting behind me.
You don’t need business cards in 2021, but a little automatic promotion never hurts. There are countless ways to turn these screen captures into successful promotions.
The gold is in the familiarity and simplicity of the screen print format. If it looks like a tweet right off the screen, people will recognize it as familiar and read the words because their interest is piqued.
Taking a new technology and integrating it into an old technology is a popular formula for success.
That’s the seed idea. Now it’s up to you to run with it.
